Kristin reads: January

In an effort to read more I will be reading and reviewing a book each month! I honestly get THE worst book hangovers as I call them. I get so emotionally invested in the characters and their lives that when the books end I feel so lost. What happens next? What happens the rest of their entire lives and to everyone they mentioned in this story? Finishing Harry Potter was the absolute worst and I don’t think I picked up another book for a few months I was so upset!

Luckily now that I have a plan of reading regularly, I will have a whole new story to dive into and more characters to become obsessed with every few weeks!! Up first was Megan Abbott’s Dare Me. Its a story about a group of cheerleaders and their new coach who seems to have a perfect life, but as one of the teammates gets closer to her she realizes not all is as it seems. There are a lot of twists including a death - or is it a murder?? The twists kept me ravenously reading, and I was eager to see what secrets would be revealed and by whom.

If I had to say what I didn’t like about the book, it would be the believability of one of the main characters. The way she spoke to her friends, family members, etc, was soooo much different than I ever witnessed in high school, and I know it’s been a while but I just cannot imagine pulling the stuff she did. It reeked a little too much of the “cheerleaders are mean girls” attitude that seems to get pushed. I completely understand every school is different but I just haven’t witnessed or even heard of teenage girls behaving so deviantly so it was a little less believable at times than I would have liked.

What was a HUGE plus for me was that this book was just turned into a series on USA network and after seeing the first two episodes, I really like how well the show is done. Do I like it better than the book? Maybe so - which is so so rare for me!

Check it out yourself here and lmk if you read it and your thoughts!!

Kindly,

Kristin
